Become my Patreon member, get early access: http://duckshit.net The day after I brought the VW Bus home, I put a charged battery in it, checked/topped off the oil and put about a gallon of fuel in the otherwise empty tank and splashed a bit down the carburetor. As you can see in this video, it lit right off, and make a lot of noise and smoke until the crud burned off and the hydraulic lifters filled themselves back up. I had some trouble keepting it running, however as the fuel pump would make noise and the engine would starve for fuel. Turns out there needs to be more in the tank for the pump to prime properly so that the gas can make it all the way to the carburetor. To dispell any myths or anyone accusing me of providing BS information... Yes this engine is the same as the engine that goes in the Porsche 914, but with a different cam grind for more low-end torque that a heavy VW Bus Camper needs. Despite being in a Porsche 914 (and the 912E) it is actually a VW Type-4 engine and originated in the VW 411 and 412 later appearing in the bay window Buses and Porsche 914/912E.
